“Everything starts with a line,” says the American painter Walter Price, his point being that drawing is the foundation of his practice. Price’s mixed-media works experiment with dreamlike composition and color, tugged between abstraction and figuration. Palm trees turn up in barren landscapes. People go about their business within fractured backgrounds. The lack of clarity is intentional, leaving the pieces open to interpretation. There’s a big difference between seeing, Price seems to say, and knowing what we see. —E.C.
