“Breaking free” is one of its slogans, and one can almost see the shards of masonry flying as our jazz avant-garde erupts from its year-and-change captivity. With performances by the likes of Oliver Lake, James Blood Ulmer, Ava Mendoza, William Parker, Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille, Mara Rosenbloom, John Zorn, the David Murray Octet Revival, and the lower-case but high-octane jamie branch—as well as film, poetry, and visual art—one can scarcely imagine a more flattering setting for the lifetime-achievement celebration of gospel-tinged composer, pianist, organist, and vocalist Amina Claudine Myers. For those still constrained by walls or oceans, all performances of this 25th edition of the festival will be available to watch via live stream. —E.E.
