“My work comes from my imagination,” says the photographer Miles Aldridge, “and I believe my view on the world is far more ‘real’ than the world outside.” Aldridge’s reality has a frisson of fluorescence. His colors read both hotter and colder than in life, and artifice seems to have the upper hand. “A slightly uncomfortable feeling is what I’m after,” Aldridge has said. Because his father was a famed designer of album covers, Aldridge grew up among musicians such as Eric Clapton and John Lennon, and developed an early passion for art and pop culture. He began his career directing music videos, then moved into fashion photography, and later turned to the fine arts. Aldridge is known for photographs of beautiful women, whom he uses as touchstones in images that draw from religion, advertising, and movies. This is his largest U.S. retrospective yet, with more than 50 portraits and tableaux on view. —E.C.
