The Dutch photographer Vincent Mentzel, born in 1945, is known as a photographer of the powerful. He made his name at the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad, where he took assignments photographing the country’s political personalities. “I’m not an artist,” he has said. “A newspaper is not an art magazine, or a picture book to be kept and treasured. It’s something people look at, read, and then throw away.” Nevertheless, Mentzel’s work, published in the pages of Time, Life, and The New York Times, has made history. In 2007, he was knighted by Beatrix, Queen of the Netherlands. This exhibition honors an illustrious career. —E.C.
