Growing up in Brazil, Vik Muniz studied reproductions of famous artists and dreamed of someday seeing the originals. In 1983, when he moved to the U.S. in his early twenties and finally saw the originals, an exploration began. What’s in the space between our experience of the real thing and its replication? Between the fact and the facsimile? For 30 years, Muniz has pursued answers. The work in these two series plays in that realm of reverberating planes. —E.C.
