The blockbuster Vermeer show at the Rijksmuseum, which includes 28 of his masterpieces, has made headlines across the globe. Prior to the show’s February 10 opening, 200,000 tickets had been sold. For those traveling to Amsterdam, here’s another event for your itinerary. An hour away in the artist’s native Delft, the Prinsenhof Museum is filling in the blanks. Masterpieces by Vermeer’s contemporaries are hanging alongside Delft potteries, tapestries, and archival documents, and the artist’s relationships are explored. Viewers will learn about Vermeer’s mother-in-law Maria Thins (who was against his marriage to Catharina Bolognese), fellow painter Leonaert Bramer, and the collectors Maria de Knuijt and her husband Pieter van Ruijven, among many others. —Elena Clavarino
