He drew inspiration from the country’s pioneering artists—John Everett Millais, John Constable—and the authors Charles Dickens and George Eliot. As the painter once said, “Great things are done by a series of small things all brought together.” Tate Britain presents more than 50 of Van Gogh’s works—Starry Night Over the Rhône among them—meanwhile looking at his influence on the Camden Town Group and painters such as David Bomberg and Francis Bacon. —E.C.
