In 1995, the historian Herbert Moldering held a retrospective of art by Umbo—born Otto Maximilian Umbehr (1902–1980)—a German photographer with roots in the Bauhaus. Moldering referred to Umbo’s work of the 1920s as the “big bang” of modern photography. Umbo was among the first to walk the streets, on the prowl for imagery that captured life in the years after the First World War. To this day he is credited with inventing the image of the New Age woman. In this exhibition some of his most important work is on display. —E.C.
