Ugo Rondinone: A Sky, a Sea, Distant Mountains, Horses, Spring

Apr 12 – May 14, 2021
1 Davies St, Mayfair, London W1K 3DB, United Kingdom

“The title of the exhibition,” explains Ugo Rondinone, “reads simultaneously as a stage direction and checklist of archetypes that take into account the watery, fluctuating state of life as it is lived, complete with the fullest range of emotions, desires, and dreams.” Rondinone’s new sculptures create a dreamlike and transitory state. Fifteen horses, the size of foals, are scattered around the gallery, cast in shades of transparent blue glass that seem to hold a horizon line within. The blue bodies act as prisms of light, and their alignment creates an ethereal landscape. Watercolors and oils on canvas are also part of the show. In his characteristically poetic way, Rondinone conjures the elements—water, air, earth, fire—with his multipart paintings. They are abstract, symbolic, in keeping with his luminous blue herd. —E.C.
