Two adaptations of Twelfth Night have landed in London within just two weeks. While smaller than the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production, it’s Tom Littler’s staging at the Orange Tree Theatre that’s causing a stir. “The show is packed with delightful comic details,” writes the Financial Times critic Sarah Hemming. “But it also draws out the dark streak of pain in the play.” Set in the 1940s, this comedy of love, mischief, and mistaken identity stands out for two bold choices: songs are woven throughout the script, and Feste—played by Stefan Bednarcyk—takes center stage, far beyond his single mention in the original Folio text. The cast also features the Shakespeare expert Oliver Ford Davies as Malvolio, Jane Asher as Maria, and Sex Education’s Patricia Alisson as Viola. —Jeanne Malle
