Tribeca Film Festival

Apr 15–26, 2020

It’s a good problem when a festival’s roster of films spans so many genres, countries, and subjects that one doesn’t know quite where to begin. Now in its 19th edition, the film festival founded by Robert de Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff opens with the world premiere of Mary Wharton’s new documentary, Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President, followed by live performances from music legend Willie Nelson and others. Festival highlights abound. In the feature-film category, there’s the New York premiere of Judd Apatow’s The King of Staten Island, with Pete Davidson in his first starring role; the U.S. premiere of Julie Delpy’s My Zoe; and the world premiere of Jamie Babbitt’s The Stand-In, starring Drew Barrymore. The documentary category sees the New York premiere of Ron Howard’s Rebuilding Paradise, produced by Brian Grazer; the world premiere of Banksy Most Wanted; and films on Brian Wilson, lead songwriter of The Beach Boys, and the photographer Helmut Newton. In a category we’ll label “indulgence,” settle in for the world premieres of Ottolenghi and the Cakes of Versailles and This is Paris (as in Paris Hilton). —J.V.
