A preening Broadway star named Richard Bean (Kevin Kline) returns to his hometown after a very public confrontation with a critic. Also, his mother has died. He gets there to find that the family’s once-proud theater is doing—dear god—dinner theater! Richard’s father, Linus (the peerless Len Cariou), is cheerfully heading into dementia, while his grumpy brother (Jon Tenney) and sister-in-law (Laura Linney) are doing what they can to keep the show going. Determined to restore both his reputation and the theater’s former glory, Richard decides to direct and star in a production of that surreal, philosophical, and heartbreaking American classic, Our Town. —Carolina de Armas
