In the projects of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Leonardo Drew woke every morning to a landfill outside his window. He did not shy away from the trash but instead dove in, using choice scraps to make art. Drew, who was born in 1961 in Tallahassee, attracted the attention of talent scouts from comic books, and an early introduction to art by Abstract Expressionists such as Jackson Pollock inspired him to explore his own style of abstraction. “I don’t think so much about, ‘Okay, I’m going to make work, and it’s going to be about this,’” Drew told Interview in 2016. “It’s just going to come out.” In his fifth solo exhibition with Pace Prints, Drew again reveals the beauty in materials that others deem trash. This time, his medium is paper-making, with color as a central motif. —Maggie Turner
