Toni Morrison's Black Book

Jan 20 – Feb 26, 2022
525 West 19th Street, New York, NY 10011, United States

“If there is a book that you want to read,” said the late author Toni Morrison, “but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.” Morrison was born in 1931, in Ohio, and by the time she was in her late 30s, she was Random House’s first Black female editor. Her first novel, The Bluest Eye, was published in 1970, and from there she went on to address history and racism in award-winning novels of poetic power. Curated by the Pulitzer Prize-winning critic and author Hilton Als, this exhibition combines Morrison’s words with visual works by Black artists. Kerry James Marshall, Julie Mehretu, and Amy Sillman are among those on display. —E.C.
