To My Friends at Horn: Keith Haring and Iowa City

Keith Haring with his work A Book Full of Fun, 1989.

Until Jan 7, 2025
160 W Burlington St, Iowa City, IA 52242

In 1984, Keith Haring traveled to Iowa City to meet Colleen Ernst, a teacher at Ernest Horn Elementary School known affectionately by her students as Dr. Art. During his three-day stay, he conducted workshops with students, delivered lectures, and showcased drawings at the Old Capitol Center, even setting up a small exhibition. He did not return until 1989, by which time he was recognized as a pioneer of Pop Art but had also been diagnosed with AIDS. Haring arrived on May 22 and that same day painted a mural titled A Book Full of Fun. The mural is currently on display alongside works on loan from the Keith Haring Foundation. Haring died in 1990, a year after the mural was completed. —Elena Clavarino
