Titus Kaphar: The Jerome Project

Oct 13, 2022 – Jan 16, 2023
25 Evans Way, Boston, MA 02115, USA

Eleven years ago, in 2011, the multimedia artist Titus Kaphar embarked on a personal quest. He and his father, Jerome, had been estranged since childhood, and Kaphar set out to locate him. He looked into prison archives, and at mugshots of incarcerated men who shared his father’s name. What he found astounded him. There were countless men named Jerome Kaphar behind bars. In a project that reflects on incarceration and the Black community, Kaphar created portraits of these men. They are haloed in gold leaf, recalling the Byzantine tradition of icon painting. —Elena Clavarino
