To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX—the 1972 prohibition of sex-based discrimination in schools, which was part of the Education Amendments Act—the New York Historical Society is displaying the work and personal objects of the activists who championed the legislation. The exhibition includes photographs, letters, and protest posters from students who faced sexual discrimination and harassment. Because Title IX granted female athletes equal rights to sports opportunities at school, special attention is paid to sports ephemera. Highlights include the Barbie dolls and Wheaties boxes that celebrated women in sports after the legislation passed. —Jensen Davis
