Thoughts of a Colored Man

Oct 1, 2021 – Mar 20, 2022
252 W 45th St., New York, NY 10036, United States

It premiered pre-pandemic in the fall of 2019, at Syracuse Stage, and now, two years later, the critically acclaimed Thoughts of a Colored Man has made its way to Broadway. Written by Keenan Scott II, the play is set during a single day in Brooklyn and focuses on seven Black men who discuss their lives with each other—and sometimes the audience. The men, whose names aren’t revealed until the end of the production, talk about their love interests, lament their day jobs, and discuss the issues facing the Brooklyn community they share—often via slam poetry, spoken word, and rhymes. The cast features Broadway veterans such as Bryan Terrell Clark (Hamilton) and newcomers like Tristan “Mack” Wilds from HBO’s The Wire. The play also marks the Broadway debuts of Scott and the director Steve H. Broadnax III. —J.D.
