The Treasury of Notre-Dame Cathedral: From its Origins to Viollet-Le-Duc

Bréviaire de Châteauroux à l’usage de Paris de Louis de Guyenne, Municipal Library of Châteauroux

Oct 18, 2023 – Jan 29, 2024
Rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris, France

In 2019, during the 12 hours Notre Dame was on fire, many of the monument’s artworks were evacuated. Now, 120 of those rescued pieces have taken a little trip to the Louvre, where they will be on display before returning to the cathedral for its 2024 reopening. Covering the treasury’s history from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, the exhibition includes relics, manuscripts, and religious objects, as well as related items from other institutions. The show guides viewers from the treasury’s origins to its destruction during the French Revolution, then to its re-creation during the time of Napoleon I, and on to the mid–19th century, when the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc restored Notre Dame and its sacristy. —Jeanne Malle
