The Telephone, by Gian Carlo Menotti

Streaming on the Scottish Opera website

Ben loves Lucy. He has a train to catch, but first he wants to pop the question. Good luck cutting into her nonstop jabber on the line. Gian Carlo Menotti’s tuneful rom-com runs a swift 25 minutes. Technology has changed some since 1947, when the piece was new, but this movie version, commissioned by the Edinburgh Festival, timeshifts smoothly as you please to the mobile age, and Menotti’s witty subtitle “L’Amour à Trois” rings as true as ever. Soraya Mafi and Jonathan McGovern shine as the lovers. Daisy Evans directs. —M.G.
