The Sun King

David Dimbleby, the British broadcaster best known for the BBC’s Question Time, first met Rupert Murdoch in London in 1968 and has followed his career ever since. In six episodes, Dimbleby tells the story of the Australian newspaper mogul’s rise—from The Sun to the New York Post to Fox News—in an effort to understand what motivates him. Murdoch has made billions, to be sure, and his conservative political views are well known. But The Sun King suggests power is the ultimate end. “I don’t think he has a coherent political philosophy,” Dimbleby says, “because it’s tempered by his enjoyment of being close to power.” Murdoch declined to be interviewed for the podcast, but comments from plenty of people who’ve worked with him—their opinions ranging from positive to “I was hoping [Jerry Hall] would shag him to death”—make for a colorful narrative. —J.V.
