After decades of military dictatorship, and one year after the Seoul Olympics, 1989 marked the beginning of South Korea’s democratization. It was also the first year its citizens were allowed to leave their country. In “The Shape of Time,” 28 artists of Korean descent, all born between 1960 and 1986, look at the past, the present, and the future of their country. Having experienced South Korea’s authoritarian regime and then being among the first to see its new democracy and growing global influence, each of these artists individually grapples with impermanence, urbanization, and identity. The multimedia show, one decade in the making, is organized into five parts: Dissonance, Reinvention, Portraying Anxiety, Been Seen, and Co-Existence. —Jeanne Malle
