The Secret World of Elephants

The exhibition features a life-size model of an African elephant—the largest living land animal.

200 Central Park West, New York, NY 10024, United States

Did you know that elephants belong to the order Proboscidea, which comes from the word “proboscis,” meaning trunk? Or that they used to live on almost every continent and many islands? Divided into three parts, this new exhibition will answer all of your elephant-related questions. Beginning with “Elephant Evolution,” the show then moves to “Bodies and Minds,” which reveals new science about elephant behavior and anatomy. Finally, “Elephants and Us” goes through the history of our relationship with these creatures, from seeing them as sacred to killing them for ivory. Highlights of the exhibition include a full-scale model of a woolly mammoth and a touchable elephant tooth. —Jeanne Malle
