The Germans called them Die wilden Zwanziger (The Wild Twenties) and the French, les années folles (the crazy years). In America those wild and crazy years became known as The Roaring Twenties. On November 11, 1918, the “war to end war” was over and many of society’s rigid rules were over too. There was partying and jazz and Josephine Baker, and there was idealism and progress. This exhibition zeroes in on Europe in the 20s and the avant-garde hotspots where art reflected the roar. It’s been designed by Calixto Bieito, acclaimed for his work in opera. —L.J.
