Between the years 1982 and 2005, August Wilson wrote his Century Cycle—10 plays, one for each decade of the 20th century, that capture the ongoing African-American experience. The fourth play, The Piano Lesson, is set in Pittsburgh (as are all the plays but one). It is 1936, the tail end of the Great Depression, and the Charles family is fighting over a family heirloom: a grand piano. The play, which earned Wilson a Pulitzer Prize in 1990, now returns to Broadway starring Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington. Directing is LaTanya Jackson, who is married to Samuel. She is the first woman to direct a Wilson play on Broadway. —Jensen Davis
