Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard premiered at the Moscow Art Theatre in January 1904, just six months before the playwright died. The tragic comedy centers on Madame Lyubov Andreievna Ranevskaya, an aristocratic Russian woman auctioning off her family’s estate. Igor Golyak, a Ukrainian theater director, has adapted the show for the Baryshnikov Arts Center, in Manhattan. “We are living through an unimaginable time of change and destruction with the war in Ukraine and with the pandemic,” says Golyak. “As humans, we are perpetually losing our cherry orchards, losing our worlds. This play is about us today.” The former ballet star Mikhail Baryshnikov will play two characters, one of them Anton Chekhov, while Jessica Hecht (Fiddler on the Roof, Breaking Bad) takes the role of Ranevskaya. There are a limited number of in-person performances, and a distinct virtual rendition of the show will feature three-dimensional, immersive elements. —Jensen Davis
