The New York Philharmonic: Concert in the Park

Jaap van Zweden conducting the New York Philharmonic in Central Park.

June 14, 2023
79th Street & 85th Street, New York, NY 10024, United States

“I actually am not thinking of it as a farewell, but rather as a new chapter,” said Jaap van Zweden of his final season as music director of the New York Philharmonic, capping off six years at the helm. And what better way to celebrate both the last hurrah and “collective best” of van Zweden and company than a free concert in Central Park, featuring not only Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, but also contributions from two members of the ever impressive NY Phil Very Young Composers. After van Zweden lights up the Great Lawn, fireworks offer aerial punctuation. —Jack Sullivan
