This show, curated by the Kitchen’s Legacy Russell, travels from Hauser & Wirth in Chelsea. Aptly named “The New Bend,” it presents the work of 12 contemporary artists in an ode to the Gees Bend Alabama quilters—the Black American women whose quilts were simultaneously an economic necessity, an intergenerational tradition, and the reinvention of an art form. Russell creates a dialogue between the past and the present while exploring the next chapter of quilting and textile practices, mediums that continue to be steeped in notions of class, race, gender, tradition, and history. —Clara Molot
