On October 28, 1982, a group of Black art students on a quest to define “the form, function and future of black art,” in the words of Keith Piper, hosted the first ever National Convention of Black Art at Wolverhampton Polytechnic. Three years earlier, they had formed Blk Art Group. The group’s founding gallery now celebrates that history. Works by Claudette Johnson, Marlene Smith, Donald Rodney, Janet Vernon, and Piper provide their own answers to their founder’s first question: What is the the form, function, and future of Black art? —Clara Molot
