“Everybody thought I was crazy,” said Georg Baselitz, referring to his decision in 1969 to paint subjects upside down. Containing art from the 1950s to today, “The Line of Wit” explores the experimental, the unconventional, the serendipitous. Jean-Michel Basquiat, for instance, wanted his paintings to “look as if they were made by a child.” Julian Schnabel has said, “Making a painting is like playing the saxophone. You hit the note and it comes out.” Ingenuity, humor, and art intersect in this show. —Ariella Paradise
