The 1960s, 70s, and 80s were a blossom time in dance. Everyone who mattered was alive. Balanchine, Ashton, Tudor, Robbins, and MacMillan. Graham, Taylor, and Cunningham. The Judson Church artists and the Joffrey Ballet. Indeed, under the leadership of its impresario Robert Joffrey and house choreographer Gerald Arpino, the Joffrey took an extremely audacious approach to its repertory. This program at the Joffrey, titled “American Icons,” catches the zeitgeist with works premiered between 1962 and 1980. The choreographers are Arpino, Graham, Joffrey, and Glen Tetley, whose Voluntaries, set to Poulenc’s Concerto in G Minor for Organ, Strings, and Timpani, was performed all over the world, back in the day. —Laura Jacobs
