The Arts Intel Report

The Italian Baroque: Venice and Beyond

Sept 29–30, 2021

The program opens with the festive Sinfonia (“overture” to you) from Claudio Monteverdi’s Orfeo, which wasn’t the first opera but might as well have been. It closes with Jean-Féry Rebel’s astonishing Les élémens, in which we witness the world taking shape from chaos. Rebel’s contribution is the “beyond” part of the evening. Along with Monteverdi, the other composers on tap are Giovanni Gabrieli, Antonio Vivaldi, and Arcangelo Corelli, Italians all. —M.G.
