When you think of the Inca Empire, Machu Picchu’s dramatic backdrop comes to mind, followed by the ancient civilization’s monumental architecture and extensive road network. A new exhibition reveals a lesser known side of the empire, the largest in pre-Columbian America: its cultural heritage. Three hundred objects—gold and silver work, ornaments, jewelry, funerary masks, feather and textile pieces—span pre-Inca times through to the people’s conquest by the Spanish in the 16th-century. —J.V.
