The Hilton Als Series: Lynette Yiadom-Boakye

Sept 12 – Dec 15, 2019
1080 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT 06510, United States

“They don’t share our concerns or anxieties,” London-based artist Lynette Yiadom-Boakye said of the characters in her portraits. “They are somewhere else altogether.” Yiadom-Boakye’s “suggestions of people”—predominately black, and drawn from her imagination, found images, and fiction—allow viewers to see stories in her portraits. Indeed, the impulse to project politics into her work, she says, is “essential.” This exhibition—the second in a series of three curated by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hilton Als—features recent paintings and prints, a collection hand-picked in collaboration with Yiadom-Boakye. —C.J.F.
