“People have forever been interested in twins,” the actress Laura Dern observed while interviewing the Haas Brothers, an L.A.-based design duo known for humorous takes on furniture (furry chairs fitted with impish horns). “It’s fascinating how you’re so uniquely different and yet partners in this way.” Having shared a womb might account for Nikolai and Simon’s synchronicity, but their fused artistic perspective likely stems from their unusual upbringing, in which people like Dern and the director Terrence Malick were family friends. Blurring the boundary between art and design, the Haas Brothers’s practice speaks to creativity that’s practically atmospheric. For SOCO’s first design show, the gallery presents 20 new works alongside three of the pair’s most famous pieces. —C.J.F.
