Margarita Teresa of Spain, the little Infanta in Diego Velázquez’s painting Las Meninas, was married to the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I in 1666. In these concerts The Newberry Consort, one of America’s eminent early-music ensembles, performs operatic excerpts and instrumental dance suites composed in honor of Empress Margarita Teresa, whose life was short (she died at age 21, in 1673). Thirty minutes prior to the concert, Dr. Robert L. Kendrick will be sharing his insights into Margarita Teresa’s fascinating life at the court of the Holy Roman Empire, as well as more information about Antonio Cesti and 17th-century opera convention. —L.J.
