You’re aware—who isn’t?—of the vogue for movie screenings with live symphonic accompaniment. We ask, Who needs this? But apparently these “special events” are music to the ears of box-office managers of orchestras around the world. Against this backdrop, it’s refreshing to discover an evening of film music presented as art in its own right. The composer, curator, and conductor is the versatile Alexandre Desplat (dez-PLAH), whose influences range from Ravel and Debussy to Bernard Herrmann’s soundtracks for Alfred Hitchcock, John (Star Wars) Williams, and Fellini’s go-to melodist Nino Rota. Desplat’s playlist for this Hollywood Bowl debut includes material from Godzilla, The Imitation Game, a threesome of Wes Anderson titles, a second threesome of movies on British royalty (The Queen, The King’s Speech, The Lost King), Girl with A Pearl Earring (which catapulted Desplat from France to the Hollywood big time), The Shape of Water, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Icing on the cake: This performance will be without visuals. Yes! Open your ears! —Matthew Gurewitsch
