Founded in 2000, Punchdrunk introduced immersive theater as we know it today, an experience in which audience members roam a movie-style set and step into a storyline built around their participation. The company’s newest show, The Burnt City, reimagines the Trojan War, placing ancient myths in an urban dystopia. Masked guests pass through a museum of antiquities into a real-life epic spread over 100,000 square feet. Punchdrunk actors enact Greek legends, dangle from the ceiling, and lead guests through cavernous Mycenae. After army barracks and checkpoints comes Troy. Guests can lose themselves in a downtown labyrinth of bordellos, bars, and deserted quarters. Performers rave and wage eerie rebellion in every line of sight, and most guests will only play voyeur—except for those special few chosen to interact one-on-one. Troy is as louche as Weimar Germany. The Burnt City, on until August, is just in time for our own age of decadence. —Grazie Sophia Christie
