The Bride of God

May 2 – July 31, 2020
542 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011, United States

This exhibition, which innaugurates Hauser & Wirth’s new space on 22nd Street, takes its title from the 1903 book Memoirs of My Nervous Illness. Written by Daniel Paul Schreber, a respected German judge who lived from 1842 to 1911—and was eventually institutionalized for paranoid schizophrenia—it became a landmark work in the history of psychoanalysis. In the book, Schreber imagines that he is alone on earth, shall become a woman, and as the “bride of god” will repopulate the world. With Schreber’s cosmology as a guiding inspiration, Hauser & Wirth offers work from major artists both within and outside its program. —L.J.
