The Armory Show debuted in 1994. It was a small fair in the Gramercy Park Hotel, presented by four ambitious New York gallery owners. Today, the show “spotlights the best 20th- and 21st-century art,” according to the Financial Times, and attracts collectors, gallerists, and art lovers from around the world. This year’s edition of the fair, the 14th, is also the third at the Javits Center. Notable absences this year include the mega-galleries Gagosian, David Zwirner, Pace, and Hauser & Wirth. On the bright side, galleries such as Clearing, Pilar Corrais, Lehmann Maupin, and Pace Prints are participating for the first time. It’s a great way to start the fall. —Elena Clavarino
