Five-hundred years ago, Albrecht Dürer took a trip through the Rhineland and the Netherlands, making journal entries along the way. In October 1520, he attended the coronation of Charles V, in Aachen, and in 1521 he visited again. While Dürer was making royal audiences, his contemporaries Lucas Cranach the Elder, Albrecht Altdorfer, and Jörg Breu were hard at work. Cranach was a court painter to the Electors of Saxony, and created prints, woodcuts, and engravings as well as portraits. Albrecht Altdorfer studied Cranach’s landscapes and then developed his own, letting the countryside dominate and casting human figures to the side. Breu was making masterful multi-panel altarpieces. The golden age of Austrian and German painting, the focus of this show, marks the transitional period from Late Gothic to the Renaissance. —E.C.
