“An explosive Hollywood Bowl tradition returns!” That’s the pitch for this perennial barn burner. Under the baton of the Dutch-born Otto Tausk, the music director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the LA Phil launches the festivities with the zesty Polonaise from Eugene Onegin. Next, the spotlight falls on the formidable Behzod Abduraimov, from Tashkent, wielding his poetic and technical mastery in the Piano Concerto No. 1. For filigree and sweeping romance, look forward to a suite from The Sleeping Beauty (resist, if you can, singing along with the waltz to which Walt Disney’s wordsmiths fitted lyrics beginning, “I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream”). And then, folks, what you’ve been waiting for, the pyrotechnic 1812 Overture, in which “La Marseillaise” dukes it out with “God Save the Czar.” —Matthew Gurewitsch
