Most people don’t know that the avant-garde, Japanese Gutai master Takesada Matsutani spent most of his career in France. Speaking of his decision, he once told Hans Ulrich Obrist, “They told me, ‘Matsutani, if you don’t get on this ship, you will be late. Come home.’ I didn’t go home.” Like many Gutai members, Matsutani was highly spiritual, and interested in connecting inner dimensions to the different mediums used in his works. In Paris, from 1967 to 1977, he produced a series of engravings that drew upon this idea. Following Matsutani’s donation to Institute National d’Histoire de l’Art last year, these impressive works will be on display. —E.C.
