The Colombian artist María Berrío describes her newest artworks as “what happens when history is forgotten and rituals become drained of any meaning.” The series consists of chaotic group portraits, influenced by her first collaboration with New York City’s GALLIM, a dance company that has performed in masks and costumes she created. Using her traditional medium of Japanese paper and watercolors, and making allusions to folktales and mythology, Berrío creates a dynamic world within each frame. In an essay that accompanies the exhibition, Siddhartha Miller writes, “The tumult on canvas proceeds from a compositional method but addresses the tumult of the world.” —Lucy Horowitz
