Takesada Matsutani

Oct 29, 2020 – Feb 11, 2021
16-15/F, 80 Queen's Road Central, Central, Hong Kong

“Gutai art does not change the material but brings it to life,” reads the manifesto of the Gutai Art Association, an influential postwar Japanese art collective. A key member from the 1960s to the 70s, the Osaka-born Takesada Matsutani chose vinyl glue as his manipulable material. In those early works, he used fans and his breath to transform the bubble-like surface into sensual, living forms. Though today Matsutani uses many materials in his paintings, drawings, and installations, he still uses vinyl adhesive—inflating it to resemble something that grew, or died. In this exhibition, dark, encumbering forms have invaded his work. —E.C.
