In a city as mellow as Melbourne, it’s generally so pleasant inside one’s own skin that one may rarely feel the need to stand outside it—the root meaning of “ecstasy.” Yet Melbourne is the setting for Supersense, which this year gathers such masters of “transformative ritual” as the Art Ensemble of Chicago (celebrating its first half-century), Roscoe Mitchell, Moor Mother, Setabuhan, and Robert Wilson, who will perform John Cage’s “Lecture on Nothing.” —E.E.
