Stray

There’s barely any talking in director Elizabeth Lo’s first feature-length documentary, but the film is far from silent. The honking and hubbub of Istanbul mesh with barks and whimpers in this ode to the city’s street dogs. People dot the film—Syrian refugees, for instance, struggling to get by in a country not their own. But the dogs are the real protagonists, and the camera follows them at head-height. It’s a unique and moving view of historic Istanbul and the diverse population—canine and otherwise—that calls it home. —J.V.
