In 1965, Bob Guccione challenged Hugh Hefner by launching Penthouse, a men’s magazine that was more erotic than Playboy and contained journalism that went deeper. Eight years after its debut and mounting success, Guccione and his wife, Kathy Keeton—a ballet dancer turned Financial Times-loving stripper—launched Viva, a female companion to Penthouse. The podcast Stiffed, hosted by Jennifer Romolini, tells the improbable story of how a porn king staffed a magazine with second-wave feminist editors. Lasting just seven years, Viva counted Shelly Duval as a cover star, Maya Angelou as a contributor, and Anna Wintour as a fashion editor (her first time in that position). The tension between Guccione’s bravado and the magazine’s feminist bona fides is part of the fun. —Jensen Davis
