Hosting the Olympics comes with a slew of perks: an influx of tourism to the host city, a boost to the local economy, and a starring role on the international stage. But behind all the glamorous new arenas and spectacle-packed ceremonies, there’s a darker reality. Hosted by the Canadian journalist Andie Crossan, State of Play tells the story of “the people pushed out and priced out in the name of televised sports.” The six-part series commences with an event that took place in Paris earlier this year: the night-time police raid on a building where hundreds of unhoused refugees were sheltering. Speaking with event experts, former Olympic athletes, and organizers from a growing anti-Olympics movement, Crossan pulls back the curtain on the real human cost of the Games. —Paulina Prosnitz
