“Color has great depth,” the Black artist Stanley Whitney has said, “it can bring up great emotion and immense feeling.” Whitney lives and works in both New York City and Parma, Italy. He paints grids in endless variations, separating thick blocks of color with thin horizontal lines. The different arrangements are vibrantly free-form and alive, and draw from Whitney’s personal experiences. Jazz, quilt-making, and idols Piet Mondrian, Giorgio Morandi, and Charlie Parker are all animating themes. In this exhibition, 11 large-scale paintings are on display. —E.C.
